At this year's GS1 Forum on extended producer responsibility for packaging, Marie Thea Hentze and Per Runchel from GS1 Denmark unveiled an upcoming packaging data service called GS1Trade Packaging.

The new service has been launched to address the EU's extended producer responsibility for packaging, which will affect many GS1 members starting in 2024.

In short, the legislation makes companies responsible for the costs and management of their packaging to reduce waste and increase recycling. This means that up to 41,000 companies in Denmark will be required to declare their packaging materials and volumes from 2025.

GS1Trade Packaging will be an essential system for the efficient management of your packaging data, making it easy for GS1 members to report packaging data to authorities and collective schemes.

Watch the video about GS1Trade Packaging below, which was also shown at the GS1 Forum 2023.

Structured and efficient management of packaging data

GS1Trade Packaging helps you manage packaging data in a structured and efficient way, ensuring your business is prepared for upcoming reporting requirements and future legislation. You have full control over who can view and access your data.

The new service from GS1 Denmark – expected to launch in summer 2024 – does more than just prepare companies to meet the requirements of the extended producer responsibility for packaging. It also consolidates your packaging data in one place, providing easy access for internal audits and compliance checks. At the same time, you gain better insight into the composition and volume of your packaging, giving you the best foundation for driving positive change. You might discover areas where you can effectively reduce waste, or find inspiration for switching to more sustainable packaging materials.

Get started now with our starter kit

In the meantime, we have created a free starter kit to help you begin mapping your packaging data. It makes perfect sense to start now so you can be ready for your first mandatory registration and reporting in April 2024.

The information you enter into the starter kit's packaging calculation tool can later be automatically transferred to GS1Trade Packaging – so you won't have to start from scratch when the system is ready.
