The most important tool for managing inventory and goods flow. That is how Stefan Maagaard, Head of Development at Frode Laursen, describes the number that identifies every pallet handled daily at Frode Laursen’s distribution centers in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. And it is no small task: an endless number of pallets and thousands of displays packed every day – along with a corresponding number of trucks to transport them to customers.
We put a lot of effort into supporting our own and our customers' goals of reducing environmental impact in the distribution chain. Optimal loading of each truck and route planning are central to this. And that can only succeed when we receive correct and precise information about the shipments we handle at our receiving docks,” explains Stefan.
This magic number comes from GS1 and is a Serial Shipping Container Code – or "SSCC" for short. The number appears on the label that must be on the pallet when it arrives at Frode Laursen.
“Suppliers must assign unique SSCCs to every single pallet, even if they contain the exact same goods. This is because, among other things, as soon as we start picking from a given pallet – whether for displays or for forwarding – we need to be able to register what remains on it,” explains Stefan.
When pallets leave Frode Laursen’s warehouses, they also carry an SSCC:
“We also apply labels ourselves, so it is 100% clear what we are sending on to our customers. It is a way to ensure complete traceability and make any product recalls as precise as possible. With this unique ID, we can remove goods from inventory more selectively, ensuring that only the absolute minimum goes to waste.”
