SSCC

SSCC stands for Serial Shipping Container Code and is used to uniquely identify each individual logistic unit, such as a pallet or parcel.

Each logistic unit must have its own unique SSCC number — even if the contents are identical. For example, two pallets of red umbrellas must each have a unique SSCC in order to be easily tracked through the supply chain. This is particularly beneficial in the event of product recalls.

How do I get an SSCC number?

You generate an SSCC number based on the 7- to 11-digit company prefix that you have ordered and received from GS1 Denmark.

Read more about the structure of an SSCC here:

SSCC based on 7 digits

  • Extension digit. You can choose a digit from 0-9 for yourself here.
  • GS1 company prefix of 7 digits. This consists of the GS1 prefix and the company reference number.
  • Serial reference (logistic unit reference number): You have nine digits at your disposal. It is recommended to start with nine zeros (000000000), then 000000001, and so on.
  • Check digit (Calculated using the Modulus 10 method). Calculate your check digit here.

Example:

Virksomhedsstyret præfiks GS1 Virksomheds-præfix Fortløbende nummer Kontrolciffer
1 ciffer 7 cifre 9 cifre 1 ciffer
3 5712345 000000001 5

SSCC based on 8 digits

  • Extension digit: You may choose this digit yourself (0–9).
  • GS1 company prefix (8 digits): This consists of the GS1 prefix and the company reference number.
  • Serial reference (logistic unit reference number): You have eight digits at your disposal. It is recommended to start with eight zeros (00000000), then 00000001, and so on.
  • Check digit: (Calculated using the Modulus 10 method.) Calculate your check digit here.

Example:

Virksomhedsstyret præfiks GS1 Virksomheds-præfix Fortløbende nummer Kontrolciffer
1 ciffer 8 cifre 8 cifre 1 ciffer
3 57123456 00000001 7

SSCC based on 9 digits

  • Extension digit: You may choose this digit yourself (0–9).
  • GS1 company prefix (9 digits): This consists of the GS1 prefix and the company reference number.
  • Serial reference (logistic unit reference number): You have seven digits at your disposal. It is recommended to start with seven zeros (00000000), then 00000001, and so on.
  • Check digit: (Calculated using the Modulus 10 method.) Calculate your check digit here.

Example:

Virksomhedsstyret præfiks GS1 Virksomheds-præfix Fortløbende nummer Kontrolciffer
1 ciffer 9 cifre 7 cifre 1 ciffer
3 571234567 0000001 0

SSCC based on 10 digits

  • Extension digit: You may choose this digit yourself (0–9).
  • GS1 company prefix (10 digits): This consists of the GS1 prefix and the company reference number.
  • Serial reference (logistic unit reference number): You have six digits at your disposal. It is recommended to start with six zeros (00000000), then 00000001, and so on.
  • Check digit: (Calculated using the Modulus 10 method.) Calculate your check digit here.

Example:

Virksomhedsstyret præfiks GS1 Virksomheds-præfix Fortløbende nummer Kontrolciffer
1 ciffer 10 cifre 6 cifre 1 ciffer
3 5712345678 000001 6

SSCC based on 11 digits

Based on the 11 digits you have received, you create 13-digit GTINs as shown in the example below:

Virksomhedsstyret præfiks GS1 Virksomheds-præfix Fortløbende nummer Kontrolciffer
1 ciffer 11 cifre 5 cifre 1 ciffer
3 57123456789 00001 7

How is the SSCC number represented in a barcode?

When an SSCC number is encoded in a barcode, it is represented in a GS1-128 barcode, which is typically used on pallet labels. Read more about how a pallet label should be structured.

GS1-128 is constructed using Application Identifiers (AIs), which define the type of data contained in the barcode. The Application Identifier (AI) for SSCC is (00).

Can SSCC numbers be reused?

SSCC numbers may only be reused after a minimum of 12 months. However, it is recommended never to reuse them.

This is because information linked to an SSCC number may continue to exist digitally within customers’ or recipients’ systems, even after the required 12-month period has passed.
