At this year's Folkemødet, GS1 Denmark focused on one of the major paradoxes in healthcare: We have both the data and the digital solutions to reduce medicine waste and prevent medication errors, yet many are hesitant to use them. Under the heading "From Waste to Wellness – Can we crack the code to medicine waste while simultaneously reducing medication errors?", an important conversation was initiated.
With experts, politicians, and professionals on stage from PharmaDanmark, Danish Regions, Næstved Municipality, Central Denmark Region, Medicoindustrien, the Danish Society for Patient Safety, and OUH Odense University Hospital – Svendborg Hospital, the spotlight was on how the healthcare system can take a major step toward both increased patient safety and a smaller climate footprint using simple technologies like barcodes and more systematic data usage. And perhaps most importantly: How we move from knowledge to action.
We delved into the medicine waste app from the Central Denmark Region, gained staff perspectives on the use of technology, and heard about the political ambitions for a greener healthcare system.
The panel agreed that it is time to get started, but that it is crucial to involve healthcare staff in the development of concrete solutions. The implementation phase must not be underestimated if real change is to occur. Last but not least, there was a call to use digital solutions based on international standards so they can be scaled to other regions and expanded to municipalities.
A debate alone is not enough. Therefore, GS1 is inviting participants to two roundtable meetings this autumn, where we can take a closer look at which solutions can contribute to using healthcare resources in the best possible way.
