Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.

GS1 has for some time wanted to strengthen its position in areas such as the green transition, as contributing significantly to this is a key part of GS1’s strategy and long-term goals.
To this end, the position of Head of Business Development has been created, with Per Runchel appointed to the role. Per joins us from a position at Vestforbrænding, where he focused specifically on executing sustainable strategies.
- There is a great need for collaboration on sustainability across value chains, where data, traceability, and documentation must bridge the gaps. GS1 standards provide the opportunity to do this, and I look forward to using GS1’s systems to help the business community and the public sector even more on their strategic journey toward a green transition, says Per Runchel.
Per's first major task will be to ensure the success of the new collaboration with packaging collective schemes—including VANA—which were established in response to new regulations regarding extended producer responsibility for packaging. Furthermore, Per Runchel will help define and ensure that GS1’s strategy is put into practice, including by driving the necessary investments and change initiatives within and across the various sectors that GS1 Denmark serves.
- We are thrilled and excited to bring Per on board as a strong and highly experienced asset. Per has a solid understanding of sales, digitalization, and consulting, so in addition to contributing to the green transition, he also possesses the right skills to maximize the value of both our services and standards, says Per Ahlmann Andersen, CEO of GS1 Denmark.
