Interview with Lars B. Nielsen, Head of Supply Chain at Hans Just

Lars has been part of the user group involved in the development of the new GS1 system, GS1Trade Packaging, which is designed to help companies manage their packaging data.

Why is it important that Hans Just has been involved at an early stage?

We are right down in the engine room and can contribute something very tangible. I have also been involved with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, which has also chosen to involve the industry and businesses.

We have 1,500 product items across many brands. Suppliers have requirements, we have requirements, and let's say 20 percent of all data points need to be changed. That is 10,000–15,000 data points we need to maintain. It requires an extremely structured approach, and the place where we store our data must be able to handle it. Otherwise, we lose the overview, and it could also happen that we don't get the benefits from the changes we make in relation to the eco-modulated fees (read: a financial structure in extended producer responsibility for packaging, which is intended to increase the incentive to produce packaging that is recyclable or reusable).

How will GS1's packaging data system make your work easier?

GS1Trade Packaging can house all this packaging data. And once we have all the data in-house, we need an overview of which data points we are missing. And perhaps also a financial impact assessment that, for example, says: Cardboard costs 2 kroner per kilo, but high-quality cardboard might cost 1 krone per kilo, and if we change the packaging on five products, we could save x amount of money.

Once the system is up and running, we will be able to use it both to create an overview and to perform financial impact assessments. And that will definitely make our work easier.

Do you have a concrete example from your area where you can see the benefit of GS1Trade Packaging?

I’m going back to the overview. I’ve calculated that we need to ask suppliers 60,000 questions to get data points for all our products. It would be great if, when I log in, I could see a list of what I’m missing. For example, if I could see that I’m missing 50 percent of my data points and see which products they relate to. So, the more statistics and overview, the better.

How can GS1 help Hans Just with extended producer responsibility for packaging?

GS1 has been great at reaching out and including us. One of the main reasons we chose GS1 is their expertise in standards. They are excellent at sharing data. I’m based in Denmark and work with both international suppliers and Nordic partners. We have our own companies in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and they will be facing the same questions as us in a few years. Once I have all the data, I can simply hand it over to Norway, let them access my data, or set up an integration. The ability to share data with both customers and partners is a key reason why we find GS1 so valuable.
