The Fary Lochan distillery was offered the opportunity to become a supplier for Coop. But how do you get started with everything that needs to be in place when dealing with such a large customer? For example, when it comes to using barcodes?

Local is good

The trend is moving toward more and more local products on the shelves of the country's grocery stores. One initiative focusing on the local is the competition for Local Product of the Year, hosted by Madkulturen and Coop, where Fary Lochan's strawberry liqueur was named this year's winner in June.

The distillery was built on Jens-Erik Jørgensen's dream of producing Danish single malt whisky. That dream became a reality in 2009, and since then, other products have been added to production, including gin and the strawberry liqueur that won this year. It is a true family-run business in Farre near Give: "My mother, older brother, younger brother, and I now run the business after our father sadly passed away," says Tine Toft-Laursen.

Coop offers the winner of Local Product of the Year the chance to be included in Coop's product range. "Even though we were happy to have won and been given this opportunity, it wasn't actually an easy decision to say yes," Tine notes. "Until now, we have sold directly to specialty shops and wine merchants, and it was important for us to find a way to enter into the partnership with Coop that would be acceptable to our good, existing customers."

The solution was for the strawberry liqueur to be sold at Coop with a new label. And it was in connection with this label that Tine got in touch with GS1 Denmark:

"Suddenly, there had to be a barcode on the bottles, and we hadn't used that before. At the same time, there also had to be barcodes on cases and pallets. Coop referred us to GS1 Denmark, and we received excellent help there. First of all, we got an explanation of why barcodes are so important—that is, what they are used for at Coop. That understanding of Coop's processes and the problems it causes if barcodes cannot be scanned made it make sense for us to put effort into getting it up and running."

Initial irritation turned to relief

"Secondly, our GS1 contact guided us through the process of creating our first barcodes. It was great to have this support the first time, but next time I expect we will manage it ourselves," Tine predicts.

"All in all, it has taken a lot of our time to become a supplier for Coop—more than we had expected. There is a lot to learn, and it is all new. Honestly, we were a bit annoyed about the barcode thing, but that quickly passed once we got in touch with GS1 Denmark. We weren't aware that GS1 is a member organization, but now we have learned that it is a really good idea to have someone who can help people like us."
