Our task at GS1 is to ensure the unique identification of products. Being able to identify products is essential for ensuring an efficient supply chain, so that products move effectively from manufacturer to consumer.
But it is just as important that information about a product being sold is captured and communicated back to the manufacturer. This ensures that goods continue to be produced and that the supply chain is kept in motion. In other words, it ensures that there are enough goods, and that they arrive on time for the consumers.
This entire identification process takes place using barcode numbers (GTIN), which can be seen below the barcode. In fact, the barcode number is simply represented in the barcode so that it can be scanned. This saves employees from having to type in the digits, which takes time and often leads to errors.
Fortunately, it has been standard practice for the last 40 years that if a product is to be sold in a supermarket, it must be equipped with a barcode number from a GS1 number series. You can therefore be sure that when you take the last liter of milk from the refrigerated display, the manufacturer will already be working to ensure there is more milk by the time you need it again, shortly after you have left the store.
