Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.

At GS1, we have several initiatives that support the fight against food waste. And now we have another one.
You can now simply send a single base unit along with its associated case. In other words: instead of sending a box with 12 fresh chickens, you can now just send a box containing one fresh chicken.
This option is available to you if you order product registration and/or quality checks for chilled and frozen goods via GS1Trade Exact as well as product images via GS1Trade Image.
Read this short guide on how to proceed before sending your package to us. To make it easier to understand, we will continue using the fresh chicken as an example:
• Choose a representative chicken: If you want images of your fresh chicken (base unit), it is important that you take the time to select a chicken that looks good and where the label(s) are positioned exactly as you want them.
For variable-weight/price products, it is important that you include information about the following:
• Enter the number of chickens: Include information on how many fresh chickens (number of base units) fit in the box (the chicken's case quantity).
• Enter the correct barcode: Remember to enter the neutral, weight/price-variable barcode for the chicken.
• Select an average chicken: The chicken you send us should be close to the average weight of the other chickens in the box. We multiply the weight of the submitted chicken by the specified number of chickens that fit in the box (case quantity) and use this when creating the entry in GS1Trade Sync.
• Clarify the box barcode: You can do this by, for example, crossing out all irrelevant barcodes on the box so there is only one to choose from.
When completing the chicken registration form:
• Enter classification code: Ensure you enter the correct import classification code (field 50128).
• Enter the full country of origin: Avoid using abbreviations; instead, enter the full country of origin/production in the creation form.
• Avoid shrink wrap: Unfortunately, this service does not apply to boxes held together by shrink wrap, as it is not possible to measure the physical dimensions (height, width, and depth) of a box that is not fully filled.
Please note: It is not possible to obtain a planogram image of shelf-ready packaging with this solution.
