On May 19, 2022, the Chinese province of Zhejiang, home to more than 65 million people, agreed to begin the transition to 2D barcodes. This is a collaboration established between GS1 Global, GS1 China, and the authorities in Zhejiang.
The plan is for over 7,000 food manufacturers to participate in the pilot project, which will also see 200 stores using 2D barcodes to scan the many items purchased daily in the Chinese province. By the end of 2023, 80% of food manufacturers in the Zhejiang province must have 2D barcodes printed on their products.
This news has received national coverage across most of China, including TV, newspapers, and digital media. According to Lars Kyed, CEO of GS1 Denmark, this is both positive and inevitable news, as the 2D barcode holds great potential for the future, particularly regarding food waste and the traceability of goods worldwide.
- In the coming years, we will see a gradual change in the barcode as we know it. Simply because the 2D barcode offers many more possibilities than the traditional barcode. The 2D barcode can hold much more data, making it easier to manage food waste, ensure patient safety, and combat the presence of illegal products in our market.
At the end of 2020, GS1 launched a program to initiate the global migration to 2D barcodes, which more than 20 countries have joined so far, including China, the USA, Australia, and Brazil.
