Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
Blue Mountain is a small soap workshop on the west coast of Jutland that creates organic and natural skincare products in small, unique batches. Rikke Rietveld is the soap maker at Blue Mountain and was one of the first to take advantage of our free service: GS1Trade Activate.
GS1Trade Activate is a tool for all GS1 Denmark members who hold a GS1 key, such as a barcode (GTIN). While companies previously used individual Excel sheets to keep track of their barcodes, the barcode number series with GS1Trade Activate is now stored in the cloud at GS1 Denmark, so you can always see which numbers you have already used. It is smart for you, your company, and the supply chain.
Rikke Rietveld finds it hard to hide her enthusiasm for the service: "When I was launching my products in a friend's webshop, one of the requirements was that I had barcodes on my products when I set them up. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to have the opportunity to use the GS1Trade Activate tool when I needed to create barcodes – and it was easy and functional."

"I actually thought it might be a complicated process, but it was easy to set up my products with GS1Trade Activate. Right now, I have a small product portfolio, but I am expanding my range, and GS1Trade Activate makes it easy to keep track of the barcodes. I can log in to GS1 from anywhere if I need to check where I left off or if I need to create new numbers," Rikke continues.
It is easy to lose track of long lists of barcodes, which can create major problems for a company if products are not equipped with unique identifiers. If the same barcode is used on two different products, things go wrong when master data is registered and when the product is sold in stores. In short, it causes logistics chaos. Rikke Rietveld: "It is a very user-friendly and simple system to use. You can either create your GS1 keys manually or choose from a prefix – meaning the next available number in the sequence – which is nice and easy and helps you avoid mistakes. After that, you simply enter the product data."
For me, it is a valuable tool, as I have all my products gathered in one database with unique GTINs, product descriptions, and images. It provides a great overview and is easy to use.
The ability to maintain barcodes is the first step with GS1Trade Activate. GS1 Denmark is constantly working to increase the possibilities and functionality so that we can continuously offer more and more with the service. And to the question of what development opportunities Rikke Rietveld sees for GS1Trade Activate, the answer is: "I actually don't know if it's already possible – but if you could, via GS1Trade Activate, download a 'catalog' for your customers, that would be fantastic – meaning a list of products with GTINs, descriptions, and images (possibly also cost and retail price). It would be an incredibly easy tool when your customers need to set up products in their own systems, or if you want to send a product list to customers who might be interested in buying products."
Rikke continues: "It could also be interesting if you could export data from GS1Trade Activate to your webshop. If you only had to enter all data, descriptions, product images, etc., in one place – namely in Activate – and could then import all that data to your webshop, it would save me a lot of extra work. It would also be interesting to have an analysis tool that could show statistics/trends on Google Shopping and Amazon," Rikke concludes. Blue Mountain's products are mainly sold via the webshop www.bluemountain.dk and through specialty and health food stores across the country.
