The largest vaccination project in world history has begun, and the regional hospital pharmacies are facing a massive vaccination effort. The tasks change on a daily basis in a resource-intensive process, making it necessary to reallocate resources from daily operations.
My workplace, GS1 Denmark, has chosen to loan me to the Capital Region’s Hospital Pharmacy to take part in the enormous task that lies ahead in the coming months. A secondment that, in many ways, puts my working life into perspective.
Since COVID-19, everyday life has changed, and for many, working life has also become different. With a background as a nurse, I must admit that this time is extra special. There is a need for healthcare personnel to be adaptable and ready to take on tasks that are not necessarily part of their normal duties. Now that the COVID-19 vaccines have arrived in Denmark, and the regions are facing the major task of vaccinating large parts of the Danish population, my daily life has also changed radically.
Instead of advising on patient safety regarding the use of the GS1 standard, I am now out in the hospitals, helping to ensure that we as a society can vaccinate those who want it. My daily life has become different, but no less exciting, as it is a great joy for me to contribute to the significant work that the pharmacies and hospitals are doing to roll out the vaccines as quickly as possible.
The new vaccines are not like the vaccines we are used to. They are produced in a completely different way, must be stored and handled differently, and new information about the vaccines is constantly emerging that pharmacies and hospitals must be prepared to manage.
Vaccines have often been able to be stored at refrigerator temperatures, but the first vaccine (from Pfizer) must be stored frozen at -90 to -60 degrees and can last for 6 days in a refrigerator. Previously, vaccines often came either in pre-filled syringes or single-dose vials. The Pfizer vaccine comes in seven doses and must be diluted before use. It is also very important that the vial is not shaken. This storage and handling process has meant that it is a bigger job than usual to handle and administer the vaccines. It takes place as a three-step process, where one person dilutes the vaccine, another prepares the syringes, and the last person vaccinates the citizen.
Now that the major vaccination effort is underway, the importance of GS1 standards has become even clearer to me. For the sake of logistics and patient safety, all distributed pharmaceuticals must be labeled with a barcode that contains, among other things, a globally unique product number (GTIN) and a batch number.
In this way, it is possible to ensure that the patient receives the correct vaccine and to maintain traceability regarding which batch has been given to which patients. It is a logistical masterpiece to make it all come together, and here the GS1 standard can truly contribute to optimizing the process.
Millions of vaccines will be administered in the coming time, and everyone who receives a vaccine must receive it twice. In this connection, it is important that the individual citizen receives the same vaccine for both vaccinations, and it is therefore extra important to ensure a globally unique identification for each individual vaccine so that it is registered correctly.
Furthermore, it is important to know which batch of a vaccine the patient has received, so that if a batch problem arises, one can quickly and easily identify which patients have received that particular batch of the vaccine.
Since November 2015, it has been mandatory in Denmark to register vaccinations in the Danish Vaccination Register and include the vaccine's batch number. GS1 provides an essential tool for both vaccine identification and batch traceability. By using GS1, it is possible to automatically register the product and batch number via the barcode, and the GS1 standard can therefore reduce the amount of time-consuming manual work and ensure accurate batch number traceability. And ultimately, patient safety.
