The regions, medical device manufacturers, and GS1 Denmark have now reached an important milestone: agreement on a shared Danish data model for medical devices. The agreement marks a significant step in the effort to ensure uniform, structured, and future-proof product data – for the benefit of patient safety, supply security, and more efficient operations in the healthcare sector.
The Danish data model has been developed as a national application of a common European data model (ECHO) and is based on existing international standards, including GS1 standards as well as requirements in EU regulations such as MDR and IVDR. The goal has not been to develop a separate Danish model, but to ensure a common and coordinated application of the European model in a Danish context.
The background for this work is a shared desire to move away from manual data exchanges via Excel spreadsheets and PDFs, and instead exchange data in a standardized, structured, and digital way via GDSN – the Global Data Synchronization Network.
The ambition is clear: one source of truth, where manufacturers update data in one place, and the regions retrieve updated and consistent data from one source.
This allows for fewer manual processes, higher data quality, and a lower risk of errors, while simultaneously creating a solid foundation for automation in procurement, logistics, inventory management, and clinical systems.
The data model has been refined through an extensive process involving five thematic meetings and workshops with broad participation from regions, suppliers, and other stakeholders. During this process, the model was reviewed in detail, and a wide range of input was received regarding data fields, validations, guidance, and overall application.
With a shared Danish data model in place, the next phase is about implementation: preparing the regions to receive data via GDSN and ensuring that suppliers have the necessary data available.
There is still some way to go, but the foundation has been laid. Once the data highway is connected to the regional systems, Denmark will be in a significantly stronger position regarding structured and standardized data sharing for medical devices – both nationally and from a European perspective.
