The first digital versions of product information for medicines, known as ePI (electronic Product Information), are now available on the European Medicines Agency (EMA) website as a result of a pilot project.

Today, all marketed medicines come with a paper package leaflet containing information such as recommendations and correct dosage. This information is vital for both patients and healthcare professionals, but until now, it has not been accessible digitally. Now, the first digital versions of this information are available on the EMA website in the respective national languages.

This is the result of a one-year pilot project involving the medicines agencies in Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Spain, as well as the EMA and a number of pharmaceutical companies. It covers a total of 25 different medicines and concludes in July 2024, after which it will be evaluated.

The purpose of the pilot project is to find a common European solution for how we share digital product information in the future.

GS1 Digital Link makes it possible to access product information digitally

If you want to ensure that your product information can be accessed digitally, the GS1 Digital Link standard can meet this need. GS1 is constantly developing the standard, and Digital Link is the part of the standard you can use if you want users to be able to access product information electronically, whether it is a package leaflet for a medicine or instructions for use for medical devices.

By using the GS1 Digital Link standard, you do not need to make any changes to your packaging. GS1 recommends that you use the barcode already on the product, which provides the following benefits:

  • Avoids unnecessary changes to the packaging
  • Uses less space
  • Avoids too many scannable elements on the label

There are many benefits for both manufacturers and consumers in being able to access product information digitally. For the manufacturer, it will be easy to update the digital information and publish it immediately, and for the consumer, it means they no longer need to keep track of the physical package leaflet. If the physical leaflet is lost, the information can be accessed with a simple scan.

It is important to emphasize that there are currently no plans to discontinue physical package leaflets. The digital leaflet will therefore exclusively be a supplement to the physical one.
