Interview with Line Plagborg, Senior Business Developer, Global Categories, Marketing & Innovation, and Project Manager for Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging at Danish Crown

Line has been part of the user group involved in developing the new GS1 system, GS1Trade Packaging, which is designed to help companies manage their packaging data.

Why is it important that Danish Crown was involved at an early stage?

Extended producer responsibility for packaging is a massive undertaking, so getting involved early is a great investment. It has given Danish Crown the opportunity to provide input and thereby shape the solution. We have gained a lot of valuable knowledge that we have been able to bring back to our own development and the internal task of getting ready.

How will this service make your work easier in the future?

The value of the service GS1 offers lies in its potential to become a one-stop shop where we can exchange data with our customers in Denmark, thereby saving us resources. It is a huge task, so we are very open to tools that can potentially help us reach our goals more easily.

It is voluntary whether you want to use GS1Trade Packaging, but it would be an advantage for us if our customers could support a common solution so that we avoid having to maintain many different platforms – and otherwise, we will certainly find a solution for that too.

At Danish Crown, we want – like many others – for extended producer responsibility to be as streamlined as possible. We are following the development of the system while simultaneously building an internal solution, because we are a global company that operates across many borders.

Do you have a concrete example from your area where you can see the benefit of GS1Trade Packaging?

We need to be able to provide data on both primary and secondary packaging to our customers. The primary packaging is the actual product packaging that is in contact with the food. This could be the tray, film, and label for pork products. And the secondary packaging could be a cardboard box used to ship the meat trays to a retail company.

GS1Trade Packaging can help us exchange this data with our customers in an efficient way.

How can GS1 help Danish Crown with extended producer responsibility for packaging?

At Danish Crown, we are already working extensively with our packaging. We have both strategies and KPIs in place for this area. Collecting data from our suppliers is not new to us as such; we are familiar with it from other markets. However, we get the impression that Danish legislation is somewhat more comprehensive than what we see in other European markets, and it will therefore require data points we have not been exposed to before.

It is a complex task that touches every part of the business: data collection from suppliers, the development of an IT system to report correctly to the authorities, and the need to report to our customers. We are going to build an internal system to handle the data collection. But when it comes to sharing that information with our customers, we see a great opportunity for GS1Trade Packaging to become a key player for us.

Whenever I have been in dialogue with GS1, they have always been open. They are in the same situation as the rest of us regarding some of the unclear requirements, but GS1 is very professional and always ready to provide the best possible help.
