Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.

I have found that the GS1 workshops regarding GS1Trade Packaging have been facilitated very professionally. We have had the opportunity to influence the solution we now see taking shape. It has been rewarding to participate alongside other stakeholders.
GS1 has the resources and expertise required to create the right solutions. It is natural to involve the outside world as well, and for me, it has been satisfying to be a part of it. Dagrofa has participated in the work across three groups, and we have felt both seen and heard.
It was important to ensure that we get a solution that not only complies with legislation but also meets our operational requirements. In other words, the solution must be able to communicate with our other applications. And we quickly received confirmation that there is integration between the platforms – both integration from GS1Trade Sync to GS1Trade Packaging, but also towards the customers who need to use the data.
GS1 Denmark has 1,200 members, such as suppliers who use GS1Trade Sync. However, there is also a large number of suppliers who do not currently use GS1. GS1 has chosen to make GS1Trade Packaging available to them, and the system is initially free to use once the annual membership fee of 500 DKK has been paid. The hope is that they will subsequently choose to also use GS1Trade Sync. It would certainly be an advantage for Dagrofa if all suppliers used GS1.
Instead of communicating with suppliers via Excel sheets, it will be a standardized approach. Suppliers will be required to fill in a wide range of values, which will provide higher quality master data and a common standard.
The challenge for the suppliers will, of course, be that they have to provide information they may not have sufficient knowledge about. They might have to go back to their sub-suppliers and ask for more information. It is the same for Dagrofa; I also have to contact our suppliers and demand information so that Dagrofa can report correctly.
If we had to communicate using Excel, it would be a massive drain on resources, and the data quality would be poorer. That is why GS1Trade Packaging is the only right way forward for Dagrofa and for our suppliers.
We have had a good dialogue regarding our private labels, but it has taken us six months to map 20 percent. So, I believe we will also have some gaps in terms of missing information from suppliers. We understand that it can be difficult for the suppliers, as we are still lacking clarification on a number of points, even though industry associations and GS1 are running awareness campaigns.
We also have many products from foreign suppliers, which is why we, together with GS1, have required that we provide information packages in English. The project has largely solved this with a website where you can easily get information in English.
We believe this is just the beginning of the journey. Extended producer responsibility for packaging is just one stone—a large one, admittedly—on the path toward exchanging more data to achieve a circular economy.
GS1 is incredibly skilled at creating guidelines. Extended producer responsibility is a large and important area, but in general, GS1 is excellent at providing simple advice on complex and heavy topics, both for suppliers and for us.
When a supplier enters data, it can be used by a number of recipients. Once the data has been entered, the supplier can make it available to all their customers, or whoever they choose. So, instead of juggling Excel spreadsheets for a variety of different recipients, they only need to use GS1.Trade Packaging.
For us, this means we have the information we need to build our brand around positive stories. Especially for our private labels, we will work with our communications department to share stories, for example, about a supplier that has chosen to switch from plastic to cardboard. We will strongly embrace those suppliers who join us on the right journey toward social responsibility and a circular economy. We will also phase out suppliers who do not want to join that journey. We will not be able to accept it if they do not provide the data required by legislation.
