Extended producer responsibility for packaging comes with eco-modulation. Do you have a handle on your packaging's eco-modulated fees? We have put together two tips on how to approach the task so you can avoid declaring everything as red and paying the highest fee.
In short, eco-modulation means that you pay for the environmental impact of your packaging. This means that if your packaging is difficult to recycle, it has a higher environmental impact, and you must pay a higher fee. Conversely, if you have chosen sustainable solutions for your packaging that make it easier to recycle, you pay a lower fee. Eco-modulation is divided into red, yellow, and green categories.
Eco-modulation is a large and complex task, especially if you have many products with different types of packaging. It is therefore necessary to start with what is most important.
We recommend using the 80/20 rule, especially if the task feels overwhelming. Start with the packaging components you have the most of. These are the components that make up 80% of your company's total packaging volume.
Focus on eco-modulating the packaging components that have a low environmental impact (green) or are close to it (yellow). This is where you can save money compared to if you classified them as red. For now, categorize all other packaging components as red. A detailed eco-modulation can be done later.
The most effective way to get a handle on your packaging data is to use a system like GS1Trade Packaging.
