Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the partnership behind the Animal Welfare Label want to further increase the visibility of the Animal Welfare Label.
GS1 has therefore ensured that the Animal Welfare Label's three product marks—for 1, 2, and 3 hearts respectively—are available as product master data, making it easy for food producers to register and highlight animal-welfare-labeled products. This means that retail chains, wholesalers, and others can identify which products carry the label/hearts.
Even with one heart, animal welfare is raised above Danish legal requirements, and for every heart added to the label, animal welfare improves further.

With 1 green heart animal welfare is raised above Danish legal requirements. There are additional requirements for stable conditions. The animals receive more bedding, more space, and shorter transport times to slaughter. The chickens are of a slower-growing breed, the pigs' tails are not docked, and the calves get a better start in life.
With 2 green hearts the requirements from heart 1 are increased to ensure even better animal welfare. Here, the animals get even more space and even more bedding. The chickens may have access to outdoor areas, dairy cows go out to pasture, and there is later weaning of piglets.
With 3 green hearts the requirements from hearts 1 and 2 are increased to ensure significantly better animal welfare. The animals have much more space. The chickens go outdoors, calves for meat production go to pasture with their mothers, and piglets are born in outdoor huts.
Registering Animal Welfare Label products for hearts 1, 2, and 3 also helps wholesalers make the label and the products visible in their respective webshops/procurement systems. In this way, we can help restaurants, canteens, and similar establishments easily find products with better animal welfare.
