The digital product passport needs to get off the ground, which is why a new consortium of leading organizations has been established to help manage its rollout. GS1 Europe has joined this consortium.

The consortium has been given the catchy name Collaborative Initiative for a Standards-based Digital Product Passport for Stakeholder-Specific Sharing of Product Data for a Circular Economy, or CIRPASS for short. The consortium is funded by the European Commission and is set to pave the way for a gradual implementation of the digital product passport from 2023 onwards. Initially, the digital product passport will focus on the electronics, battery, and textile sectors.

Breaking new ground

The new consortium was launched on October 5, 2022, in Brussels, where 30 partners representing thousands of organizations involved in the digital product passport met. The goal was to break ground on creating a clear concept for the digital product passport, ensuring that the work and the model for the passport deliver proven benefits for the circular economy, and to create a roadmap for the implementation of the passport.

GS1’s role in the consortium will be to contribute knowledge and experience regarding the use of standards, as well as the strategies to be employed when rolling everything out.
