Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.

Demands for product data, documentation, and transparency are growing – and so is the complexity for companies that must meet them. GS1 Denmark and the Varefakta Foundation are now entering into a strategic partnership aimed at helping companies all the way from data collection and compliance checks to the final barcode on product packaging. The goal is to create greater transparency in the value chain and better consumer information.
The partnership combines technological solutions and regulatory expertise to make it simpler and more secure for companies across the value chain – from manufacturers to suppliers and retailers – to comply with increasing requirements for documentation and data quality, both nationally and internationally.
The partnership unites GS1’s global data standards and digital platforms with Varefakta’s third-party verification and specialized knowledge of labeling, declarations, and product legislation. The collaboration creates a unified foundation for more efficient data management, higher quality, and greater trust across the value chain.
"There are constantly increasing demands for documentation, transparency, and compliance. This requires both technical solutions and impartial expertise. With GS1 Denmark, we gain a strong partner that can handle the technological side, while we contribute with compliance reviews. Together, we make it easier for companies to document that their data and labeling are in order," says Signe Frese, CEO of the Varefakta Foundation.
"With Varefakta as a partner, we gain a strong supplement to our technological and data-related competencies. Varefakta brings a high level of regulatory insight and credibility to the collaboration, which is absolutely crucial for our solutions to support companies' needs for compliance and data quality," says Per Ahlmann Andersen, CEO of GS1 Denmark.
For companies, the partnership means a single point of entry for both data and compliance. It reduces complexity, saves time, and minimizes the risk of errors. The result is more valid data, faster processes, and a stronger position with trading partners, authorities, and consumers alike.
With GS1 and Varefakta as a joint foundation, companies get more cohesive and future-proof solutions – ready for both today's and tomorrow's requirements.
The Varefakta Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that helps companies with correct labeling, declarations, and legislation. Varefakta’s work creates transparency, credibility, and security – for the benefit of companies, consumers, and society alike.
GS1 Denmark is a non-profit member organization and part of the global GS1 network. GS1 develops and maintains standards and digital solutions that create consistency in product and data information – including through barcodes, GTIN, GDSN, and EPCIS. The goal is to streamline workflows, increase data security, and support sustainable and compliant business development.
