Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
Below you can read the instructions on how to use the correct logistics labels in the healthcare industry.
The S1-128 logistic label is applied to logistic units, i.e. to the units shipped, often a pallet or carton, shipped individually. In order to ensure cooperation in the supply chain, it is important that standards for the information transferred between trading parties are respected and that the labelling is correct.
This guide can act as a checklist when building your logistic labels.

What is an AI?
An Application Identifier (also called AI) is a number of 2-4 digits that tells the software “behind” the barcode reader the meaning and format of the digits and/or letters that stand after the AI. Read more about Application Identifiers.
(1st) The barcode type must be a GS1-128, and in addition can GS1 DataMatrix are used. Code 128 and ISO DataMatrix are other barcode types and must not be used.
(2nd) Always use a separator character (FNC1) after a variable-length data field, which is followed by more data, e.g. AI (400), AI (37), and AI (10). As far as possible, place the variable data at the end of the barcode.
(3) Brackets may not be expressed in the barcode itself, but must be visible in the readable text below the barcode.
(4) Calculate the check digits in the GTIN (EAN item number) and the SSCC code correctly. Calculate your check digit.
(5) AI (37) may only be used in conjunction with AI (02).
(6) If the pallet is an ordering unit, AI (01) is used instead of AI 02 and AI (37).
(7) Each pallet shall have a unique 18 digit SSCC code: Read more about building the SSCC.
(8th) The barcode must not contain internal information expressed in AI (91) - (99). AI (90) may only be used if you have agreed with your customers.
(9th) There should be a certain margin to the right and left of the barcode (also called light zones) where no lines, signs or similes should appear.
(10th) thee dark streaks in the barcode should appear sharply on a light background.
(11th) Logistic label should be placed on a smooth surface without creases.
(12th) It is recommended that the logistic label has A5 size.
(13) It is important that a barcode has a size so that readability is ensured. See more in Figure 5.9.3.5-1/5.9.3.8-1 in the General Specification.
(14th) For one pallet, GS1-128 should be logistically label-placed as shown below.
