Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
An Application Identifier (AI) is a 2–4 digit number.
It tells the software “behind” the barcode scanner the meaning and format of the digits and/or letters that follow the AI.
The data following an Application Identifier may be either alphanumeric or numeric. Depending on the specific AI, the number of characters that follow may be fixed (a mandatory length) or variable.
Each AI may only be used once per product/package level.

The Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is used to identify logistic units.
This means that, for example, two identical pallets containing the same product are uniquely identified by their own individual SSCC.
In situations where a product needs to be traceable, it is important that each individual shipment is uniquely identified. The SSCC is one of the most important keys to information relating to a specific shipping unit.
Structure of the SSCC
The structure of the SSCC is as follows:
Together, all 18 digits form a globally unique serial number used to identify a logistic unit.

SSCC numbers assigned to shipping units may only be reused for other units after a minimum of 12 months.
Application Identifier 01 is used to identify a trade item with a GTIN: GTIN-13, GTIN-14 or GTIN-12.
AI (01) is used when identifying a standard unit, such as a case or a pallet containing the same items each time the case or pallet is ordered.
When identifying with GTIN-13 or GTIN-12, leading zeros are added so that all 14 digits in the data format are completed.
If the GTIN is prefixed with the digit 9, this indicates that the product is of variable measure. In such cases, it must be used together with either AI 30, 3nnn, or 8001.

Application Identifier 02 is used to indicate the GTIN of the contents within another unit and must always be used together with Application Identifier 37 (count) and Application Identifier 00 (Serial Shipping Container Code).
AI 02 may only be used on a logistic unit.

A customer orders three identical cases, and the supplier has not defined a trade item corresponding to the three cases. The cases are placed on a wooden pallet, stretch-wrapped, and labelled with: AI 02 for the contents (the GTIN of the cases), AI 37 for the quantity (3), AI 00 for the SSCC

Application Identifier 10 is used to indicate a unit’s batch/lot number.
A batch number may contain various types of information, such as production line number, production time, batch/blend number, etc. What these elements have in common is that a given product can be traced using this batch number.
The receiving company does not need to know the structure of the batch/lot number.
Note: Most retailers will only accept one batch number per pallet.
AI 10 must appear together with either AI 01 or AI 02.
Application Identifiers for Dates
Application Identifiers 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 are used to indicate different types of dates. When dates are indicated on a logistic unit, they refer to the units contained within the shipping unit.
If the products within a unit have different dates, the earliest date must always be selected.
All date AIs have a fixed data format of n2+n6, where the n6 format is YYMMDD.
All date AIs must appear together with AI 01 or AI 02.

Application Identifier 11 indicates a product's production date.
Application Identifier 12 indicates the due date of an invoice.
Application Identifier 13 indicates the date on which the product was packed.
Application Identifier 15 indicates the date until which the product is best before.
By using AI 15, information is provided about the product’s quality. The product is considered to be at its best and freshest when used before the indicated date. This date is also referred to as the “Best Before” date.
GS1 Application Identifier (16), defined by the manufacturer, indicates the latest date by which the product may be sold at retail to the final consumer. The product should not be sold after this date.
Application Identifier 17 indicates the product’s expiration date (maximum shelf life). AI 17 relates to the safe use of the product. For example, pharmaceutical products may be marked with this date. The date is also commonly referred to as “use by” or “expiry date.”
It is often used for food products with a very short shelf life.
Application Identifier 20 is used to indicate an internal product variant of a standard product.
For example, a company may wish to distinguish between two otherwise identical products manufactured at different production sites and therefore uses a product variant in combination with the GTIN.
The product variant may only be used by the brand owner and only in cases where the variation of the product is not significant enough to require the assignment of a different GTIN.
A company must wait a minimum of 12 months before reusing the same product variant for another variant within the same product.
AI 20 must appear together with AI 01 or AI 02.
Application Identifier 21 is used to indicate a primary serial number. The serial number is a unique number assigned to a product for use throughout its lifecycle. The serial number must be unique for a specific product, but the same serial number may be assigned to different products. Together with the GTIN, the serial number provides a unique identification of the individual product.
AI 21 must appear together with AI 01.
AI 22 is used when there is a need to distinguish between two retail trade items where the difference between the two products does not require the assignment of separate GTINs, but communication between trading partners is necessary to support end users.
The retail trade item variant is assigned by the brand owner.
Application Identifier 240 is used to indicate additional product identification information beyond the GTIN. The additional product identification may, for example, be an internal item number or a catalogue number.
AI 240 must always be used together with a GTIN. AI 240 must appear together with AI 01 or AI 02.
Application Identifier 241 is used for the customer’s additional product identification. It may be used in situations where the customer has assigned their own internal number to a product, even though the product is already identified by a GTIN. Companies are advised not to use AI 241 unless strictly necessary, as AI 241 should be regarded as a temporary solution until GTIN product numbers are fully implemented.
AI 241 does not replace AI 01 (GTIN) as the primary identification of the product. AI 241 must always be used together with AI 01 or AI 02.
AI 242 is used to further specify data that uniquely identifies a customer-specified product - AI 242 should always be used in conjunction with a 14 digit GTIN starting with 9.
The format of application of AI 242 is variable up to 6 numerical characters.
AI 242 is used exclusively in the production, maintenance and repair environments.
Application Identifier (AI) 243 is used to specify a Packaging Component Number (PCN). A PCN is assigned to a packaging component for its entire lifetime. It must be used in conjunction with a GTIN and, together with the GTIN, identifies the relationship between the finished consumer trade item and one of its packaging components.
Currently, the PCN may only be used for internal purposes.
Application Identifier 250 indicates a secondary serial number. AI 250 is used in conjunction with AI 21, which indicates the primary serial number.
The secondary serial number is generated based on the serial number of the “main product”, for example, an enclosure for an electronics product may have a secondary serial number. It is important that the company defines some rules for the use of both primary and secondary serial numbers.
Application Identifier 251 is used to specify, among other things, an earmark number.
Application Identifier (AI) 253 specifies a Global Document Type Identifier (GDTI). A GDTI is used to identify a document type, with an optional serial number. The GS1 Company Prefix forms the first digits of the GDTI and ensures that the number is globally unique. The structure and content of the GDTI are determined by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix and are used to uniquely identify each document type. The digit preceding the optional serial number is a check digit.
The optional serial number is assigned to an individual document for the entire lifetime of that document. When the serial number is combined with the GDTI, the complete number uniquely identifies the individual document.
The structure of the serial number is determined by the document owner.
Application Identifier (AI) 254 indicates that the data field contains a GLN Extension Component. AI 254 must always be used in conjunction with AI 414, which identifies a physical location using a GLN.
The structure of the GLN Extension Component is determined by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix. The GLN Extension Component must remain unchanged for as long as the associated GLN remains unchanged.
Application Identifier (AI) 255 contains a Global Coupon Number (GCN).
The GCN provides a globally unique identification for a coupon, with an optional serial number.
The GS1 Company Prefix forms the first digits of the GCN and ensures its global uniqueness. The structure and content of the GCN are determined by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix and are used to uniquely identify each coupon offer. The digit preceding the optional serial number is a check digit.
The optional serial number is assigned to each individual coupon, and its structure is determined by the coupon issuer. The combination of the GS1 Company Prefix, the coupon reference number, and the serial number uniquely identifies each coupon. The serial number is numeric and may contain up to 12 digits.
AI 30 is used to specify a number of pieces in a weight variable ordering unit, where the number of pieces varies.
AI 30 should always be used in conjunction with AI 01 for GTIN number. The weight-variable product shall be identified by a GTIN-14 starting with the digit 9.
Application Identifiers for Measurement Units
This section describes the Application Identifiers that exist for unit of measurement. The AIs consist of 4 digits, where the value of the 4th digit (n) indicates the number of decimal places.
The data format for all the AIs is n4+n6.

The 4th digit (n) can be from 0-9, meaning that smallest unit one can specify is:

GS1 recommends the metric system (SI system - International System of Units). If other systems are used, it should be noted that there may be a difference between targets in the US and the UK.
The AIs from 3100 to 3699 indicate different types of units of measurement related to trade or logistics.
AI 3nnn (2) shell appear together with AI 01 or AI 02 where the 1st digit is 9.
Application Identifier 37 indicates number in a unit. When using AI 37, AI 02, for the GTIN number contained in the unit, as well as AI 00 for SSCC, must be indicated.
Application Identifier 390n indicates the amount to be paid. n indicates the location of decimal places:

Application Identifier 391n indicates in which currency, and the amount payable indicates the location of decimal places:
208 is the ISO currency code for Danish krone.
Application Identifier 391n must be entered together with AI 415 GLN location number and AI 8020 credit card reference number.
Application Identifier (AI) 392 contains the amount payable for a variable measure trade item. The variable measure trade item is identified by a GTIN, and the amount is expressed in the local currency. AI 392n must always be used in conjunction with a GTIN.
The digit “n” indicates the number of decimal places:
“0” indicates no decimal places.
“1” indicates that the payable amount is expressed with one decimal place.
Example:
Application Identifier (AI) 393 specifies an ISO currency code and the amount payable for a variable measure trade item. The amount is expressed in the indicated currency. AI 393n must always be used in conjunction with a GTIN. The ISO currency code is a three-digit numeric code based on ISO 4217 and specifies the currency in which the amount is stated.

AI 394n shall always be used in conjunction with AI 255, which identifies the Global Coupon.
Application Identifier 400 indicates the number used by the buyer to identify an order. AI 400 may also include reference to a release or version number and line numbers as determined by the party assigning the number.
The number can be either initiated by the buyer or seller.
By specifying the customer's order purchase number in the barcode, it is possible to compare the delivered goods in the receipt with the goods specified in the shipping notice or the order.
Application Identifier (AI) 401 specifies a consignment number. A shipment consisting of multiple units may be assigned a consignment number to identify the entire shipment. The consignment number is assigned by the carrier, freight forwarder, or similar party. The consignment number must always begin with the GS1 Company Prefix and the company reference number of the organisation administering the number. The consignment number may change at each stage of transport, whereas AI 402 (GSIN) remains the same for the entire shipment.
Typically, AI 401 represents the House Bill of Lading number (House Waybill number).
Application Identifier (AI) 402 specifies an identification number for the entire shipment. AI 402 is assigned by the seller and may be used throughout the entire transport flow, including on the transport document and in EDI messages.
The GSIN must always begin with the GS1 Company Prefix and the company reference number of the organisation administering the number. The following 9 or 5 digits are assigned by the company, depending on whether the GSIN-8 (short) or GSIN-17 (standard) structure is used. The final digit is a check digit.
AI 00 is used to identify an individual logistic unit, whereas AI 402 is used to identify the entire shipment.
Application Identifier (AI) 403 specifies a routing code. The routing code is assigned by the company transporting the shipment and serves as supplementary information to the SSCC. The routing code must not be used to indicate information for which a specific Application Identifier exists, such as AI 420 – Ship-to postal code (domestic).
Application Identifier 410 indicates the GLN location number of the recipient of a logistic device.
Application Identifier 411 indicates the GLN location number to which an invoice or invoice is issued.
Application Identifier 412 indicates the seller's GLN location number.
Application Identifier 413 indicates which GLN location number a product should be shipped to.
AI 413 can be used when the final destination of transport units is known and the transport device must pass through an intermediary, such as a warehouse or a cross docking terminal.
AI 413 can be used in conjunction with AI 410, which identifies the temporary destination location if the logistical unit is to be stored at an intermediary.
Application Identifier 414 specifies a GLN physical location number.
The barcode containing this AI and the specified GLN location number are retained to the physical location the GLN location number indicates. For example, the GLN location number may indicate a warehouse location within a delivery scenario or mailbox.
Application Identifier 415 indicates a GLN location number for the invoicing merchant and is used for debit cards.
This AI is mandatory when applying EAN barcode marking on deposit cards. AI 415, together with AI 8020 for the credit card reference number, uniquely identifies a deposit card.
AI 416 specifies GLN for production or service location. The GLN is awarded by a GS1 member organization.
Application Identifier 420 indicates the postal code to which a shipment must be sent. It is expected that the sender and receiver belong to the same postcode system.
Application Identifier 421 specifies the ISO country code and postal code to which a device must be sent. It is expected that sender and receiver fall under different postal code systems.
The country code to be used is defined in ISO standard 3166.
NB! For AI 420 and 421, no specific location is actually specified, but the information is used as additional information in transport and distribution planning.
Application Identifier (AI) 422 specifies the country of origin of the product. A product’s country of origin is normally the country where the product was manufactured. It is often determined based on the proportion of the product’s components that were produced in that country. As there are multiple ways to define a product’s “country of origin,” it is recommended that the definition be agreed upon bilaterally between trading partners. It is the responsibility of the producer/manufacturer to ensure that the country of origin is correctly declared.
The country code to be used for the country of origin is defined in ISO standard 3166.
Application Identifier 423 is used to indicate for example the countries in which the animal was raised. Up to 5 different countries can be specified. Countries must be expressed using 3 digit country codes defined in ISO standard 3166.
Application Identifier 424 is used to indicate the country in which, for example, the animal was slaughtered. The country with the 3 digit country codes defined in ISO standard 3166.
Application Identifier 425 is used to indicate, for example, the country in which further processing takes place. The country with the 3 digit country codes defined in ISO standard 3166.
Application Identifier 426 is used to indicate, for example, the country in which the animal was both born, raised, slaughtered and cut up. The country must be expressed using the 3 digit country code defined in ISO standard 3166. AI 426 can be specified at all stages of the supply chain.
Application Identifier (AI) 427 specifies an ISO-based country subdivision code (e.g. provinces, states, or cantons) indicating the region of origin of the product.
The ISO country subdivision code contains up to three alphanumeric characters based on ISO 3166-2:2007.
Note: This AI applies to a grouping of products (e.g. a carton) where the products originate from the same region.
Note: The declared region of origin is the location where the product was processed or manufactured. It is the responsibility of the brand owner to determine the correct origin.
AI 427 must always be used in conjunction with a GTIN and AI 422 (which specifies the country of origin of the product).
Application Identifier 7001 indicates a NATO standard product number for products used by members within the NATO alliance.
The number should be used in the context of AI 01 (GTIN).
Application Identifier 7003 specifies an expiration date and time.
The manufacturer determines the expiration date and time. Indicated for products with a very short life and for products that do not need to be transported far and do not need to be transported outside a time zone.
A typical application of AI 7003 is in hospitals or pharmacies, where there are products made for a single patient that have a lifespan of less than one day.
The service life of the product depends on the pharmaceutical substances used in the treatment. The exact expiration date is established at the end of the manufacturing process. AI 7003 must always be entered together with AI 01 (GTIN).
If there is no requirement to set the expiry date to the nearest hour (or less), AI 17 - Expiration Date should be used.

Application Identifier (AI) 7004 specifies the active potency.
The active potency of certain medicinal products (e.g. certain biological products such as haemophilia treatments) may vary from batch to batch within agreed tolerances relative to the nominal potency. Both the nominal and the active potency of the product are measured in International Units (IUs).
AI 7004 must always be used in conjunction with a GTIN.
Application Identifier 7005 indicates the catch area.
The catch area in which the fish are caught is identified based on the international fisheries areas and sub-areas as defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). A complete overview of FAO catch areas can be accessed via http://www.fao.org/fishery/area/search/en. The catch area is assigned by the vessel that has caught the fish.
AI 7005 must always be entered together with a GTIN.
Application Identifier 7006 indicates the first freezing date. The first freezing date applies to products frozen directly after slaughter, harvesting, capture or after initial processing of the product. Examples include fresh meat, meat products, or fish products. The first freezing date shall be determined and assigned by the undertaking carrying out the freezing. The format is as follows: YYYYMMDD

AI 7006 must always be entered together with a GTIN.
Application Identifier (AI) 7007 specifies a harvest date or a harvest date range.
For example, the harvest date may be the date or date range on which an animal was slaughtered, a fish was caught, or a crop was harvested. This date or date range is assigned by the company performing the harvesting, slaughtering, or catching.
When referring to a date range, it applies to the entire animal and to all meat or fish cuts derived from that animal.

The GS1 Application Identifier (7020) indicates that the data field contains an ID for products that have been refurbished with a combination of recycled parts, repaired parts and new parts.
AI 7021 indicates the functional status. The functional status of a product may be required by the supplier to comply with regulatory or commercial requirements. For example, type-approval certificates may be required for a product to be sold to a specific country/market.
AI 7022 indicates audit status. This status may need to be specified by the manufacturer in order to meet legal or commercial requirements. For example, type-approval certificates may be required for a product to be sold to a specific country/market.
AI 7023 indicates that the data field contains the GIAI (Global Individual Asset Identifier) of a composite entity. AI 7023 is used where an additional barcode containing GIAI from a composite device must be labeled on the conductive subcomponent. This may be the case if there is a need to distinguish between the composite unit and the identification under the component (s).
Application Identifier 703S is used to specify the ISO country code of the country in which the given company is located as well as the authorization number of the company.
The last digit indicates which number in the supply chain the company in question has, which works with the meat. That is, 7030 is a slaughterhouse, 7031 is the first cutting company, 7032 is the second cutting company, etc.
According to standard, 703S is used together with GTIN number.
Application Identifiers 710, 711, 712, and 713 indicate a National Healthcare Reimbursement Net Number (grant/reimbursement number) from the NHRN Application Identifier series.
Use of the NHRN Application Identifier, in conjunction with a GTIN, is necessary in some countries/regions/cooperative relationships to comply with a national/regional law or industry requirement when the GTIN cannot meet the need on its own.
AI and Associated Regulatory Organization:
Application Identifier 8001 provides information about roll products, such as paper rolls.
AI 8001 should be used with AI 01 for GTIN number.
The structure of the information in AI 8001 is the following:
Application Identifier 8002 indicates the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) of Cellular Mobile Phones (CMT). The number is usually assigned by a national or multinational body. The ESN is unique to each CTM.
Application Identifier 8003 is used to specify the identification of return units. A return unit is a reusable device used for transporting a given product, such as beer bottles and beer crates, gas cylinders or pallets.
Example: Identification of return units: (8003) 05712345000014ACB988.
Application Identifier 8004 indicates a serial number for equipment and technical aids.
A device identified by AI 8004 is uniquely identified, with the GS1 Prefix and company reference number included in AI 8004. AI 8004 can be used when the combination of AI 01 for GTIN number and AI 21 for serial number is not appropriate.
An example of application of AI 8004, is electricity meters, where there is a need to assign an individual number to each electricity meter.

AI 8004 is not to be confused with AI 00 for logistic units and AI 01 for trading units.
Application Identifier 8005 is used to indicate the price per unit of measurement when labeling trading units with variable measures. Use is specifically agreed between two trading parties.
The price per unit of measurement, which is marked on the trading unit, can be used to distinguish price variants of the same products. AI 8005 is used in conjunction with AI 01 GTIN number.
The content and structure of the data format is determined by the trading parties.
Application Identifier (AI) 8006 indicates that a logistic unit, for example identified by a single GTIN, physically consists of multiple units. Some companies sell products that consist of several individual components. For example, a furniture manufacturer may sell a table made up of a tabletop and table legs. These items are packed in two separate logistic units but together constitute one product identified by a single GTIN.

The logistic unit containing the tabletop is labelled: 057123450000140102 – i.e. package no. 1 of 2.
The logistic unit containing the table legs is labelled: 057123450000140202 – i.e. package no. 2 of 2.
Another example of the use of AI 8006 is in the footwear industry, where a trade item (a commercial unit) may consist of multiple logistic units.
This Application Identifier must not be used for units that can be sold separately.
Application Identifier 8008 indicates the date and time of a product specified by the manufacturer.
Specifying the year, month, date, and hour is mandatory - minutes and seconds are optional.
AI 8008 should always appear alongside AI 01 (GTIN).
AI 8010 specifies the component/part identifier. The company prefix, which is included as part of the identifier, is assigned by a GS1 member organization to the company, which assigns the C/P identifier. This ensures that the number is globally unique.
AI 8011 specifies a component/part serial number, which is assigned to the device throughout its lifetime. Combined with a C/P identifier, a serial number uniquely identifies a single item.
Application Identifier (AI) 8012 is used to specify the version number of a given software.
Application Identifiers 8017 and 8018 indicate a Global Service Relation Number (GSRN). The GSRN is used to identify either the recipient or the individual service provider in the context of a service relationship. In order to identify both roles in a service relationship (recipient and provider), two GSRN AIs are available. The AIs allow the service provider to store data relating to services for the recipient and the individual provider.
The GS1 Business Prefix is assigned by GS1 member organizations to the company that assigns the GSRN, i.e. the company that provides a service. This makes the GSRN numbers unique worldwide.
The structure and content of the reference for the service is determined by the owner of the GS1 company prefix.
The 18th digit is a check digit.

The electricity supply sector and the natural gas sector in Denmark, among others, have decided to use AI 8018 for identification of measurement points.

Application Identifier (AI) 8019 specifies a Service Relation Instance Number (SRIN). The SRIN is used when the identification of a service relationship using a Global Service Relation Number (GSRN) for the recipient needs to be further specified with a sequence indicator corresponding to each encounter within the service process. AI 8019 enables the service provider to store data relating to specific instances of the service provided to the recipient.
The structure and content of the SRIN are determined by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix in order to uniquely identify each specific service instance.
Application Identifier 8020 indicates a reference number for a deposit card.
