Application Identifiers

An Application Identifier (AI) is a 2–4 digit number.
It tells the software “behind” the barcode scanner the meaning and format of the digits and/or letters that follow the AI.

The data following an Application Identifier may be either alphanumeric or numeric. Depending on the specific AI, the number of characters that follow may be fixed (a mandatory length) or variable.

Each AI may only be used once per product/package level.

00 Serial Shipping Container Code

The Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is used to identify logistic units.
This means that, for example, two identical pallets containing the same product are uniquely identified by their own individual SSCC.

In situations where a product needs to be traceable, it is important that each individual shipment is uniquely identified. The SSCC is one of the most important keys to information relating to a specific shipping unit.

Structure of the SSCC

The structure of the SSCC is as follows:

  • First digit (Extension Digit, Vs1): Indicates a company-assigned extension digit. The company may choose which digit (0–9) to use.
  • Next 7 digits (P1–R7): Indicate the Company Prefix, which consists of the GS1 Prefix and the company’s reference number.
  • Next 9 digits (F1–F9): Assigned by the company and represent a sequential serial number.
  • Last digit (K): A check digit.

Together, all 18 digits form a globally unique serial number used to identify a logistic unit.

SSCC numbers assigned to shipping units may only be reused for other units after a minimum of 12 months.

01 GTIN number (Global Trade Item Number)

Application Identifier 01 is used to identify a trade item with a GTIN: GTIN-13, GTIN-14 or GTIN-12.

AI (01) is used when identifying a standard unit, such as a case or a pallet containing the same items each time the case or pallet is ordered.

When identifying with GTIN-13 or GTIN-12, leading zeros are added so that all 14 digits in the data format are completed.

If the GTIN is prefixed with the digit 9, this indicates that the product is of variable measure. In such cases, it must be used together with either AI 30, 3nnn, or 8001.

02 GTIN Contained in Another Unit

Application Identifier 02 is used to indicate the GTIN of the contents within another unit and must always be used together with Application Identifier 37 (count) and Application Identifier 00 (Serial Shipping Container Code).

AI 02 may only be used on a logistic unit.

Example

A customer orders three identical cases, and the supplier has not defined a trade item corresponding to the three cases. The cases are placed on a wooden pallet, stretch-wrapped, and labelled with: AI 02 for the contents (the GTIN of the cases), AI 37 for the quantity (3), AI 00 for the SSCC

10 Batch/lotnummer​

Application Identifier 10 is used to indicate a unit’s batch/lot number.

A batch number may contain various types of information, such as production line number, production time, batch/blend number, etc. What these elements have in common is that a given product can be traced using this batch number.

The receiving company does not need to know the structure of the batch/lot number.

Note: Most retailers will only accept one batch number per pallet.

AI 10 must appear together with either AI 01 or AI 02.

Application Identifiers for Dates

Application Identifiers 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 are used to indicate different types of dates. When dates are indicated on a logistic unit, they refer to the units contained within the shipping unit.

If the products within a unit have different dates, the earliest date must always be selected.

All date AIs have a fixed data format of n2+n6, where the n6 format is YYMMDD.

All date AIs must appear together with AI 01 or AI 02.

When indicating dates, only the last two digits of the year are used:

  • Year 1999 = 99
  • Year 2000 = 00
  • Year 2001 = 01

Note: Most retailers will only accept one production/expiry date per pallet.

By using AI 15, information is provided about the product’s quality. The product is considered to be at its best and freshest when used before the indicated date. This date is also referred to as the “Best Before” date.

GS1 Application Identifier (16), defined by the manufacturer, indicates the latest date by which the product may be sold at retail to the final consumer. The product should not be sold after this date.

Application Identifier 17 indicates the product’s expiration date (maximum shelf life). AI 17 relates to the safe use of the product. For example, pharmaceutical products may be marked with this date. The date is also commonly referred to as “use by” or “expiry date.”

It is often used for food products with a very short shelf life.

Application Identifier 20 is used to indicate an internal product variant of a standard product.

For example, a company may wish to distinguish between two otherwise identical products manufactured at different production sites and therefore uses a product variant in combination with the GTIN.

The product variant may only be used by the brand owner and only in cases where the variation of the product is not significant enough to require the assignment of a different GTIN.

A company must wait a minimum of 12 months before reusing the same product variant for another variant within the same product.

AI 20 must appear together with AI 01 or AI 02.

21 Primary Serial Number

Application Identifier 21 is used to indicate a primary serial number. The serial number is a unique number assigned to a product for use throughout its lifecycle. The serial number must be unique for a specific product, but the same serial number may be assigned to different products. Together with the GTIN, the serial number provides a unique identification of the individual product.

AI 21 must appear together with AI 01.

22 Retail Trade Item Variant

Application Identifier 241 is used for the customer’s additional product identification. It may be used in situations where the customer has assigned their own internal number to a product, even though the product is already identified by a GTIN. Companies are advised not to use AI 241 unless strictly necessary, as AI 241 should be regarded as a temporary solution until GTIN product numbers are fully implemented.

AI 241 does not replace AI 01 (GTIN) as the primary identification of the product. AI 241 must always be used together with AI 01 or AI 02.

242 Made-to-Order (MTO)/Variant Number

AI 242 is used to further specify data that uniquely identifies a customer-specified product - AI 242 should always be used in conjunction with a 14 digit GTIN starting with 9.

The format of application of AI 242 is variable up to 6 numerical characters.

AI 242 is used exclusively in the production, maintenance and repair environments.

243 Packaging Component Number (PCN)​

Application Identifier (AI) 243 is used to specify a Packaging Component Number (PCN). A PCN is assigned to a packaging component for its entire lifetime. It must be used in conjunction with a GTIN and, together with the GTIN, identifies the relationship between the finished consumer trade item and one of its packaging components.

Currently, the PCN may only be used for internal purposes.

Application Identifier 250 indicates a secondary serial number. AI 250 is used in conjunction with AI 21, which indicates the primary serial number.

The secondary serial number is generated based on the serial number of the “main product”, for example, an enclosure for an electronics product may have a secondary serial number. It is important that the company defines some rules for the use of both primary and secondary serial numbers.

Application Identifier (AI) 253 specifies a Global Document Type Identifier (GDTI). A GDTI is used to identify a document type, with an optional serial number. The GS1 Company Prefix forms the first digits of the GDTI and ensures that the number is globally unique. The structure and content of the GDTI are determined by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix and are used to uniquely identify each document type. The digit preceding the optional serial number is a check digit.

The optional serial number is assigned to an individual document for the entire lifetime of that document. When the serial number is combined with the GDTI, the complete number uniquely identifies the individual document.

The structure of the serial number is determined by the document owner.

254 GLN Extension Component​

Application Identifier (AI) 254 indicates that the data field contains a GLN Extension Component. AI 254 must always be used in conjunction with AI 414, which identifies a physical location using a GLN.

The structure of the GLN Extension Component is determined by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix. The GLN Extension Component must remain unchanged for as long as the associated GLN remains unchanged.

255 Global Coupon Number (GCN)​

Application Identifier (AI) 255 contains a Global Coupon Number (GCN).

The GCN provides a globally unique identification for a coupon, with an optional serial number.

The GS1 Company Prefix forms the first digits of the GCN and ensures its global uniqueness. The structure and content of the GCN are determined by the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix and are used to uniquely identify each coupon offer. The digit preceding the optional serial number is a check digit.

The optional serial number is assigned to each individual coupon, and its structure is determined by the coupon issuer. The combination of the GS1 Company Prefix, the coupon reference number, and the serial number uniquely identifies each coupon. The serial number is numeric and may contain up to 12 digits.

AI 30 is used to specify a number of pieces in a weight variable ordering unit, where the number of pieces varies.

AI 30 should always be used in conjunction with AI 01 for GTIN number. The weight-variable product shall be identified by a GTIN-14 starting with the digit 9.

Application Identifiers for Measurement Units

This section describes the Application Identifiers that exist for unit of measurement. The AIs consist of 4 digits, where the value of the 4th digit (n) indicates the number of decimal places.

The data format for all the AIs is n4+n6.

Example:

The 4th digit (n) can be from 0-9, meaning that smallest unit one can specify is:

GS1 recommends the metric system (SI system - International System of Units). If other systems are used, it should be noted that there may be a difference between targets in the US and the UK.

The AIs from 3100 to 3699 indicate different types of units of measurement related to trade or logistics.

AI 3nnn (2) shell appear together with AI 01 or AI 02 where the 1st digit is 9.

Application Identifier (AI) 392 contains the amount payable for a variable measure trade item. The variable measure trade item is identified by a GTIN, and the amount is expressed in the local currency. AI 392n must always be used in conjunction with a GTIN.

The digit “n” indicates the number of decimal places:

“1” indicates that the payable amount is expressed with one decimal place.

Application Identifier (AI) 393 specifies an ISO currency code and the amount payable for a variable measure trade item. The amount is expressed in the indicated currency. AI 393n must always be used in conjunction with a GTIN. The ISO currency code is a three-digit numeric code based on ISO 4217 and specifies the currency in which the amount is stated.

The digit “n” indicates the number of decimal places:

  • “0” indicates no decimal places.
  • “1” indicates that the payable amount is expressed with one decimal place.

Application Identifier 400 indicates the number used by the buyer to identify an order. AI 400 may also include reference to a release or version number and line numbers as determined by the party assigning the number.

The number can be either initiated by the buyer or seller.

By specifying the customer's order purchase number in the barcode, it is possible to compare the delivered goods in the receipt with the goods specified in the shipping notice or the order.

401 Consignment number - GINC (Consignment number)

Application Identifier (AI) 401 specifies a consignment number. A shipment consisting of multiple units may be assigned a consignment number to identify the entire shipment. The consignment number is assigned by the carrier, freight forwarder, or similar party. The consignment number must always begin with the GS1 Company Prefix and the company reference number of the organisation administering the number. The consignment number may change at each stage of transport, whereas AI 402 (GSIN) remains the same for the entire shipment.

Typically, AI 401 represents the House Bill of Lading number (House Waybill number).

Application Identifier (AI) 402 specifies an identification number for the entire shipment. AI 402 is assigned by the seller and may be used throughout the entire transport flow, including on the transport document and in EDI messages.

The GSIN must always begin with the GS1 Company Prefix and the company reference number of the organisation administering the number. The following 9 or 5 digits are assigned by the company, depending on whether the GSIN-8 (short) or GSIN-17 (standard) structure is used. The final digit is a check digit.

A typical application of AI 7003 is in hospitals or pharmacies, where there are products made for a single patient that have a lifespan of less than one day.

The service life of the product depends on the pharmaceutical substances used in the treatment. The exact expiration date is established at the end of the manufacturing process. AI 7003 must always be entered together with AI 01 (GTIN).

If there is no requirement to set the expiry date to the nearest hour (or less), AI 17 - Expiration Date should be used.

The structure is:

  • Year: e.g. 2007 = 07, that is mandatory.
  • Month: eg January = 01, that is mandatory.
  • Day: e.g. second day = 02, which is mandatory.
  • Hour: the number of hours based on local 24-hour time (e.g. 2 PM = 14) that is mandatory.
