Pay attention to

The images produced by GS1Trade Image reflect the physical products you submit.

To enable GS1Trade Image to deliver your ordered product images, make sure that:

  • the product must first be created and published in GS1Trade Sync
  • please avoid using unnecessary tape or similar materials on the products - especially on shelf-ready packaging - as this may affect the quality of the images or, in some cases, make it impossible to produce usable product photos
  • products that require preparation (such as cooking or assembly) will be photographed as received and will not be prepared before photography
  • Where necessary, GS1Trade Image may remove shrink wrap, protective plastic, or similar packaging materials to reduce reflections and achieve the best possible image quality.

Naming of basic units, packages, ready-to-sell packages, mix packages based on GDSN standards

To determine the default front of base units, cases, and shelf-ready packaging, GS1 follows Section 4.2 of the GS1 Package and Product Measurement Standard. The image naming and photography specifications are then applied in accordance with the GS1 Product Image Specification Standard.

Regardless of their actual shape, all products are treated by the standard as having six sides.

  • The primary front is defined as the saleable surface displaying key consumer-facing information, such as the brand, product name, and net content. If no obvious front exists, the side with the largest surface area is considered the primary front. If two sides have the same surface area, the taller side is designated as the primary front.
  • Once the primary front has been identified, the remaining sides, as well as the top and bottom, are defined relative to it.

Image file names indicate the image type, camera angle, orientation, and product presentation. For example: "C1N1".

CGI images follow the same naming convention as photographs of physical products. To distinguish them, the suffix "_R" is added to the file name - for example, "GTIN_C1N1_R".

All image naming follows the guidelines set out in the GS1 Product Image Specification Standard.

Image Standard & Image Standard Plus

Image Standard

Image Standard contains high-resolution images and planogram images of all 6 pages, as well as 2-3 rotated and/or augmented supplementary images.

A total of 9 different high-resolution images are provided in both JPG (with active clipping path) and PNG file formats. Further, between 6 and 8 planogram images are provided. All images are uploaded to GS1Trade Sync, from where they can be retrieved.

Image Standard package includes

  • 9 high resolution images, packshots in PNG file format and unzipped
  • 9 high resolution images, packshots in JPG file format with clip path around the dephotographed product
  • 6-8 planogram images in PNG file format
  • 1 planogram image of alternate front, if this exists
  • 1 planogram image of a ready-to-sell package in a PNG file format if the base unit is supplied in a ready-to-sell package

The following graphic editing is part of the Image Standard package

  • Removing vintage on wine bottles on high-resolution images
  • Removing date and LOT stamps on high-resolution images
  • Removing Date and Lot Stamps on Planogram Images
  • Removing excess plastic snips on bag (bread bags) on planogram images
  • Removing snip on yogurt on planogram images
  • Remove excess packaging on ready-to-sell packages

In some cases, extensive graphic post-processing is required to ensure optimal image quality. This can be by major scratches, skewed composition of packaging or by other defects. It is at the discretion of the photographer whether this is necessary and this triggers a graphic post-processing surcharge.

Assumes prior creation of product GTIN in GS1Trade Sync, unless there is an order for product creation & quality control.

Image Standard applies only to the product in packaging.

Images in this package are only uploaded to GS1Trade Sync, i.e. it is not possible to have the images delivered via other channels (cloud, server, WeTransfer, etc.).

The following angles are provided in the Image Standard package

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 The product front is defined on the basis of the most recent “GS1 Package and Product Measurement Standard”.

2 Rotated left, rotated 15 degrees and camera lifted 30 degrees (GTIN_C1L1).

3 Rotated right, rotated 15 degrees and camera lifted 30 degrees (GTIN_C1R1).

Image Standard - image examples of base units

Note: If you have welded bags that stand up and where the same bag is used for many different products, it is difficult to ensure great uniformity in how the image appears. If great uniformity is important, we recommend making use of CGI images, which you will find further down.

Image Standard - Package, Ready to Sell Package, Kneke and Mix Package

When ordering for GTIN in conjunction with Image Standard, images are delivered from the same angles as for the base unit. Below are pictorial examples of collier units:

Image Standard Plus

GTIN_C1R1_s02

With Image Standard Plus, it is possible to obtain high-resolution images at predetermined angles that are beyond what is included in the Image Standard image package.

In addition to what is included in the Image Standard image package, here you get the option of 2 self-selected angles, which are delivered as high-resolution images in both JPG file format with clipping path and exposed in PNG file format.

To know the difference between the original Image Default image and the selected image, the selected image is named with “_s02”.

This order assumes prior creation of the product in GS1Trade Sync unless there is an order for product creation & quality control. Images in this package are uploaded to GS1Trade Sync.

Note: Image Standard Plus applies only to the product in packaging.

The following angles can be selected in the Image Standard Plus package

  • Left side/GTIN_C2N1_S02: Camera elevation 30 degrees taken straight from the front
  • Back page/GTIN_C7N1_S02: Camera elevation 30 degrees taken straight from the front
  • Right side/GTIN_C8N1_S02: Camera elevation 30 degrees taken straight from the front
  • Rotated left/GTIN_C1L1_S02: Product is rotated 15 degrees and camera lifted 0 degrees
  • Rotated right/GTIN_C1R1 _s02: Product is rotated 15 degrees and camera lifted 0 degrees

In the Image Standard Plus image package, up to 2 variants can be selected from the list.

CGI images

Get to market faster – or choose CGI for packaging that's difficult to photograph.

Computer Generated Images (CGI) allow you to get images of the product before it is produced. It is also ideal for products where the packaging is difficult to take pictures of, such as welded bags.

CGI creates a professional-quality digital marketing image based on the artwork and dimensions of the product.

This means that you can get great looking and likable images as soon as the product artwork is in place, so it can potentially get to market faster.

It is possible to order CGI images of all sides/angles plus rotated left, rotated right and raised front.

Read more CGI and see more product images

Welded bags that will often get a better result with CGI

Welded bags can be difficult to photograph neatly due to reflections, uneven welds, and unstable shapes. Therefore, using CGI (Computer Generated Images) often gives a much better result.

Examples of poses where CGI can be an advantage:

  • Coffee bags - shiny, metallic or unstable in shape
  • Vacuum-packed foods - e.g. cheese, meat or fish with folds and condensation
  • Metallic stand-up pouches - snacks, protein powder, tea
  • Sterile medical bags - clear plastic bags with inlays and barcodes
  • Frozen bags - bags with dew, frost and hard folds
  • Large welded sacks - e.g. animal feed, flour or chemicals

You can choose from the following options in CGI

  • Front Image Ordering (GTIN_C1N1_R)
  • Ordering the front image along with one or more other angles

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 The product front is defined on the basis of the most recent “GS1 Package and Product Measurement Standard”.

2 Rotated left, rotated 15 degrees and camera lifted 30 degrees (GTIN_C1L1_R).

3 Rotated right, rotated 15 degrees and camera lifted 30 degrees (GTIN_C1R1_R).

4 Elevated front, straight front view and camera leveled 30 degrees (GTIN_C1C1_R).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ordering CGI images

In order to execute an order, it is assumed that the product has been created as a minimum draft in GS1Trade Sync.

These images are delivered as high-resolution packshot in both JPG file format (with clipping path) and PNG file format (uncut). The high-resolution images are named with an _R to distinguish them from the regular product images. In addition, a planogram image, which is named on a par with the regular planogram image, is provided for use in space systems.

Certified Photographer

If you have associated a photographer yourself, GS1 can certify that photographer as an approved photographer. This is done by GS1 reviewing what requirements and specifications the images should meet, and then checking images of 10 products. Upon approval, the photographer will obtain certification and be able to upload images in GS1 himself Trade Sync, which is automatically forwarded to the data recipients. The images will appear with sender.
