Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
A GTIN-14 identification number can be used to barcode and identify trade items, including cases. GTIN-14 is used, for example, when you want to indicate a hierarchy from a product identified with a GTIN-13 to higher-level packaging units - such as a carton containing 6 consumer units. In addition, GTIN-14 is frequently used in GS1-128 barcodes and in GS1 systems, such as GS1Trade Sync.
See below what to do once you have received your company prefix (between 7 and 11 digits) from GS1 Denmark and need to convert it into barcodes.
First, you need to create the GTIN product numbers that the barcode will contain:
With 7 digits, you can form 100,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 8 digits, you can form 10,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 9 digits, you can form 1,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 10 digits, you can form 100 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 11 digits, you can form 10 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers

Nedenfor kan du se hvordan data synkroniseres imellem købere og sælgere vha. GS1 GDSN og GS1 Global Registry.
1. Loading of company data
2. Registering of company data
3. Subscription to seller's data pool
4. Publishing of company data
5. Confirmation receipt of company data
Structurally, a GTIN-14 is a GTIN-13 with a leading digit known as a logistic variant, which is a number between 1 and 8. Please note that the check digit changes when the logistic variant changes.
For each packaging level (trade unit, quarter pallet, etc.), the GTIN-13 of the consumer unit is used with a leading logistic variant that indicates the packaging level. Digits 1–8 can be used as logistic variants. Digits 0 and 9 cannot be used (9 is reserved for cases containing variable measure products).
In the example below, a product has the GTIN-13: 5712345000014 (where “4” is the check digit). If logistic variant 1 is added in front, a new check digit must be calculated. The GTIN-14 then becomes: 15712345000011
(the final “1” is the newly calculated check digit). This could represent, for example, a carton containing 6 consumer units. If there is a higher packaging level, digits 2, 3, etc. can be used as logistic variants.
Example
- The first digit indicates the logistic variant (a number between 1 and 8).
- The GS1 prefix and company reference number are assigned by GS1 Denmark and together form the GS1 Company Prefix.
- This is followed by the product reference number, which you assign yourself. The company can assign up to 100,000 product numbers within the 5 available digits (depending on prefix length). The last digit is a check digit (calculated using the Modulo 10 algorithm).

A GTIN-14 can be represented in an ITF-14 barcode. ITF-14 is a barcode type that can be printed directly on cartons, especially on corrugated board.
A GTIN-14 can also be represented in a GS1-128 barcode and in a GS1 DataMatrix..
