Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
Barcodes for books and journals/magazines are based on an ISBN number and an ISSN number, respectively.
These barcodes/numbers are generated using the barcode generator in our service GS1Trade Activated.
Access to GS1Trade Activate requires a GS1 membership.
During the membership registration process, please note the following:
See below what you need to do once you have received your company prefix (between 7 and 11 digits) from GS1 Denmark and need to convert it into barcodes.
First, you must create the GTIN product numbers that the barcode will contain.
With 7 digits, you can form 100,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers

With 9 digits, you can form 1,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers

First you need to contact the Danish ISBN office and be assigned a 13-digit ISBN number.
Once you get the number, you can encode it in an EAN-13 barcode.
ISBN number: 978-87-569-1714-8.

When converting an ISBN number to an EAN-13, the EAN-13 number must begin with the prefix 978 followed by the ISBN number (b1 — b9) WITH check digits.
If you only received 12 digits from the ISBN office, you can calculate your check digit using our check digit calculator.
Next, go to “Guide to forming barcodes in GS1trade Activate”.
First, you must contact the Danish ISSN Centre at the Royal Danish Library to obtain an 8-digit ISSN number.
Once you have received the number, follow this structure:
*In this example, the check digit will be 3. You must calculate the check digit for your specific number.
Go to the check digit calculator.
You now have your complete 13-digit barcode number. Continue to “Guide to generating barcodes in GS1Trade Activate.”
Once you have become a member of GS1 Denmark, you can access our service GS1Trade Activate, where you generate barcodes.
