Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
In some cases, it is necessary to encode the product’s price in the barcode, as the product is sold by weight and therefore varies in price. This typically applies to meat and dairy products, as well as fruit and vegetables.
Depending on whether a piece of cheese weighs 490 g or 505 g, the consumer must pay accordingly, and the price is therefore included in the barcode. In this case, an RCN-13 item number (Restricted Circulation Number) is used, which is represented in an EAN-13 barcode.
Products with an RCN cannot be exported to other countries, hence the name “Restricted.” When exporting variable-price products to other countries, you must contact the GS1 organization in the relevant country.
If you would like, I can also ensure full terminology alignment across all your RCN and GTIN sections so everything reads consistently in one publication.
See below what you need to do once you have received your company prefix (between 7 and 11 digits) from GS1 Denmark and need to convert it into barcodes.
First, you must create the GTIN product numbers that the barcode will contain:
With 7 digits, you can form 100,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 8 digits, you can form 10,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 9 digits, you can form 1,000 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 10 digits, you can form 100 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers
With 11 digits, you can form 10 pieces. GTIN Product Numbers

Nedenfor kan du se hvordan data synkroniseres imellem købere og sælgere vha. GS1 GDSN og GS1 Global Registry.
1. Loading of company data
2. Registering of company data
3. Subscription to seller's data pool
4. Publishing of company data
5. Confirmation receipt of company data
In the example below, the RCN-13 item number 2135040039753 is shown, where the product costs DKK 39.75.
The first two digits in the RCN-13 item number are a GS1 prefix indicating that the product has a variable price. The GS1 prefixes for RCN-13 item numbers with price are: 21, 22, 23, or 24.
The following two digits are the company reference number, which is assigned to the company by the GS1 organization.
Two digits are available for the product reference number, allowing the allocation of 100 numbers (00–99).
The price in the RCN-13 item number consists of six digits and is expressed in øre.
The last digit is a check digit, calculated using the Modulus 10 method. The check digit is used to verify both the RCN item number and the barcode symbol.
As the number does not contain a GS1 prefix identifying the country in which the company is registered, products using this code cannot be exported to other countries — hence the name “Restricted.”
When exporting variable-price products to other countries, you must contact the GS1 organization in the relevant country and obtain a company reference number there.
Please note that the structure of the RCN-13 item number may differ from the structure used in Denmark.
