GPC

Mandatory for the exchange of product master data between GDSN-certified international data pools.

GPC (Global Product Classification) is a global GS1 standard for product classification that can be used across all parts of the supply chain. The classification can, for example, be used as a basis for statistics, purchasing and sales, category management, as well as for searching and organizing products.

The GPC standard is updated twice a year. Users contribute to developing and maintaining the standard, ensuring that it continuously supports their needs.

GPC is a freely available part of the GS1 system and is a prerequisite for using the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) - therefore also Gs1Trade Sync.

Overblik over hvordan GS1 GDSN fungerer

GPC structure

The GPC system is structured hierarchically, and each level is identified by a unique 8-digit code. A product’s category is always defined at the Brick level.

Example:

Segment:
Industriel sektor
50000000 – Levnedsmidler/drikkevarer/tobak
Familie:
En division under den pågældende sektor
50130000 – Mælk, Smør, Fløde, Yoghurt, Ost, Æg, og substituerbare produkter
Klasse:
En gruppe af identiske kategorier
50131700 – Mælk og substituerbare mælkeprodukter
Brick:
En kategori af identiske produkter
10000025 – Mælk og substituerbare mælkeprodukter (letfordærvelige)

Benefits of GPC and GS1Trade Sync: Across industries and borders

Trading becomes easier when buyers and sellers use a shared system for classifying products and services. Many industries have developed their own coding systems for classification, but these can often only be used nationally within that specific industry. A standard that works across industries and national borders can create significant savings for all parties. Among the benefits are:

  • The risk of misunderstandings is reduced because the same code is used for the same product, regardless of national language.
  • It becomes easier to complete master data in GS1Trade Sync: the GPC code you select is linked to the required data fields.
  • The GPC code broadly describes which product is being created and is connected to the “Functional name” in the product description.
  • It becomes easier for users (for example buyers) to find products and compare prices and quality.
