Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.
The United Nations Standard Product and Services Code (UNSPSC) is an international classification system for goods and services. It is considered to be the most efficient, flexible and broadest covering classification system in existence today and has been used for over 20 years.
It is used, among other things, to create an overview of the consumption of companies and public authorities and to conduct systematic searches related to e-commerce. Several public bodies require suppliers to disclose the UNSPSC code on their product or service as a requirement in their tenders and contracts.
The translation of UNSPSC version 19.0501 has been handled by GS1 Denmark on behalf of Digitalization Board, Danish Regions and KL. The project is part of The Common Public Digitalisation Strategy 2016-2020.
When classifying your goods/services, there are some questions that you should find the answer to before you get started - possibly by contacting your customer:
Which version of the UNSPSC should you classify from?
How are you going to provide the UNSPSC code? E-invoice, e-catalog or other?
At what level should goods/services be classified? Segment, family, class or commodity?
In addition, it is a good idea to decide how UNSPSC codes are handled in your ERP system. It is important to be able to register both code and version as the UNSPSC evolves and new versions are continuously coming.
