GTIN
Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.

GTINs are used to identify retail units, case packs, and pallets. The most widely used GTIN is GTIN-13, which consists of 13 digits and can be encoded in an EAN-13 barcode.
To create a GS1 barcode, you need a GTIN. To assign GTIN-13s to your products, you must subscribe to a GS1 Company Prefix.

We recommend assigning the numbers sequentially. This means that the first product reference number is 00000, the next is 00001, and so on up to 99999. This ensures the most efficient use of the numbering capacity within the 13 digits.
Many companies use internal product numbers that exceed the five digits available in the GTIN item number. It is therefore recommended that the company establishes a 1:1 relationship between internal product numbers and GTIN item numbers.
We advise against embedding meaning in the digits of the item number, for example, using the first two digits to indicate “material type,” the next two digits to indicate “colour,” and the last digit to indicate “model.”
Your pasta screws went out of production five years ago. However, you have now invented something new: pasta nuts. Naturally, they need a product number and a barcode. But can you reuse the GTIN item number that was assigned to the pasta screws — the number encoded in the barcode?

Why must you not reuse a GTIN item number?
Risk of serious errors
For several years, it has been prohibited to reuse identification numbers for products used in the healthcare sector.
One of the reasons is that identification numbers recorded in patient files must never be open to misinterpretation. If a medicinal product with a specific ID number was administered to a particular patient in 2010, that number must never later refer to a different medicinal product — even 20 years or more later.
This principle now applies to all product types.
