GTIN

Colloquially, many know GTIN as a barcode, but technically, GTIN is the number found beneath the barcode symbol itself, and can therefore also be used for other technologies such as 2D barcodes and RFID tags.

Do you need barcodes for products?

Barcodes help identify your products in stores, webshops and warehouse systems. At GS1 Denmark, you create barcodes through a GS1ID subscription.

When your company purchases barcodes from GS1, this is done through a GS1ID subscription.

With the subscription, you receive a company prefix that identifies your business and forms the basis for the GTINs used for your product barcodes.

The length of the prefix determines how many unique barcodes you can create.

Example:

A small package allows for a limited number of product numbers.
A larger package allows for a higher number of product numbers.

With a GS1ID subscription, you can also create SSCC numbers for shipments.

SSCCs do not affect the number of GTINs you can create.

The capacity is defined from the start and cannot be expanded later. If you run out of numbers, you will need to purchase a new GS1ID subscription to generate additional numbers.

‍Why choose a larger package from the start?

The number of product barcodes (GTINs) you can create depends on the number range you select initially. This means that a subscription cannot be expanded over time. If you run out of numbers, you will need to purchase a new number range.

It is therefore important to choose a package that also covers your future needs.

Price example (price per unit per year):

  • ‍‍1 unit: DKK 257.50
  • 10 units: DKK 113.30
  • 100 units: DKK 14.42
  • 1000 units: DKK 1.75
  • 10,000 units: DKK 0.21
  • 100,000 units: DKK 0.02

As you can see, 100,000 barcodes cost only around DKK 600 more per year than 1,000 barcodes, but provide 100 times as many numbers.

We therefore recommend choosing a package that supports your company’s future growth.

GS1 is required to submit an annual report to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with information about which members use their GS1ID for barcode labeling of medical devices sold in the United States.

All GS1 members must therefore indicate whether their GS1ID is used to create a UDI-DI for labeling medical devices sold in the U.S.

If you answer yes, your company name will be included in the annual report submitted by GS1 to the FDA.

Do you need barcodes for shipments?

Barcodes for shipments are used to identify a delivery, such as a pallet or a parcel. They are typically used on pallet labels when goods are shipped to retailers such as Coop, Salling or Dagrofa.

For shipments, an SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) is used, which consists of 18 digits.

At GS1 Denmark, you create SSCC numbers as part of a GS1ID subscription.

When your company has a GS1ID subscription, you can also create SSCC numbers for shipments.

SSCC numbers are used to identify a specific shipment, such as a pallet or a parcel, and enable tracking of deliveries throughout the entire supply chain.

An SSCC consists of 18 digits and is generated based on your GS1 company prefix, which you receive as part of your GS1ID subscription.

SSCC numbers are typically used on pallet labels in connection with deliveries to retailers and logistics partners.

With a GS1ID subscription, you can create both GTINs for products and SSCCs for shipments. SSCC numbers do not affect the number of GTINs you can create.

How many SSCC numbers can you create?

With a GS1ID subscription, you can create very large quantities of SSCC numbers for shipments, for example for pallet labels.

Even the smallest subscription allows you to create up to 1,000,000 SSCC numbers, and larger subscriptions provide even more.

For most companies, this means that in practice, you will not run out of SSCC numbers.

The package you choose therefore typically has no impact on SSCC capacity.

It is only relevant to choose a larger package if you also expect to use the subscription for product barcodes (GTINs) further on.

Why am I only paying part of the annual fee?

At GS1 Denmark, subscriptions are typically billed annually. When you sign up, you therefore only pay for the remainder of the current year. After that, your subscription will renew at the full annual price.
